The additional monsters of Doom 2 was a nice; addition, to the original cast. Allowed for some more variation in monster placement and level design; however, Doom 2 also introduced the hugely overpowered SSG, so that doesn't help the DM balance (but who really cares about DM balance?) but it did encourage more of the fast-paced, run-n-gun playstyle that, I felt, was more prominent in Doom 2.

As far as level design goes, I'll go with Doom 2 because even the guys at id themselves said when they started doing map designs for Doom, they were still in "Wolfenstein" mode and making very 90 degree angled maps for Doom despite having more creative tools. That's why I put my vote down for Doom 2 as far as level design.

>Better soundtrack
This one is really subjective (not like these all aren't but whatever), but I do agree that some of the tracks in Doom 2 don't exactly feel "Doom-ish" and thus also detracts from the atmosphere.

I played the fuck outta Doom, way more than I ever played Doom 2, and I have to say I prefer Doom 2 a lot more.
