I'm playing this again after a long time. Still feels a bit underwhelming after 3. Nearly dropped it a few times.
The style / atmosphere / music are awesome, and the gameplay is decent. But the levels are just way too big and far less focused. There's too much collecting barely important coins, and overall level design is way more "loose", with less actual puzzling and more running around and gimmicks. Finding 4 pieces is too easy, only the CD can be tough to find. The timer is more annoying than anything, and minigames are really whatever.
WL3 was very minimalistic, but it was straight to the point. You only had a key and a chest to find on a level; every corner of the level was a puzzle to solve, and you constantly opened up something new. it was brutal, but it was addicting as hell, just pure puzzle platforming at its finest.
WL4 is a game that oozes soul, but they just missed something with the gameplay. Though at least it feels like a game for actual humans after WL3 that was more like light torture.

Don't see this game mentioned nearly as much as it deserves.

Oh and I guess Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission as well. R&D1 were god tier developers.

Why was the game's intro so good?

Warioland 4 gives me this feeling of being in constant danger. Think about. Wario, led by greed, gets trapped in this pyramid, going through absolute horror, every level being an uncertain maze, the music is generally going apeshit and once you can almost reach the end of a level you have to flee from that hell hole on a time limit. What for? To defeat a boss that has it's own economy behind it (buying extra weapons for cash). Playing that game creeped me out. It always seemed like it was designed to be a lesson on how awfully horrid life can be if it is led by greed. It's just unsettling for me.
