In those days, keyboard+mouse was the default controls for FPS. Took me a long while to adapt to dual analog, as I still preferred keyboard+mouse for FPS since it just seems I am more accurate and proficient in the games even though movement was not analog with the WADS buttons. Just like how I prefer the Sega Saturn pad for almost all fighting games, even though most people prefer joystick, mouse+keyboard for FPS is just right to me even though most of the best players use Xbox controllers.

Since I started FPS games on PC with Wolfenstien 3D and Doom. Having gotten used to mouselook on Quake/Unreal there too, I never understood all the popularity of Halo, letting my friends get those victories, and only until Gears did I put the effort into trying to learn dual analog for FPS. I still think using a mouse is more accurate for aiming, but a lot of the younger generation have become pros with the dual analog style. Maybe that's why the Dreamcast couldn't hit a chord with FPS, despite having a couple of my favorites, like the Xbox did because my old muscle memory and joints just prefers the mouselook over sticks which is the preferred way to play these days.

The Dreamcast and PS2 versions do support mouse+keyboard controls.

I can only tell you of my own experience back then, and that is completely false in my situation. Back in those days, we used to have bi-weekly gatherings and we'd bring our latest games and systems with to show off. There were 10-12 of us, but only 3-4 of us had the Dreamcast (including myself). None of us used it for web browsing, as computers did it better, as a few of us had cable modems, and only 1 person got the broadband adapter for the Dreamcast to play PSO, yet even then they would browse on PC. The host had a few computers on the network, and old weak one was the "bitch" computer which was untouched to burn Dreamcast games for us all which was acquired from browsing online on a PC.

The Dreamcast does not sound like it is for your FPS tastes then. I thought a mouse & keyboard worked well with the genre in those days.

Some Dreamcast games were designed with a mouse in mind. I was so used to Mouse+Keyboard that I couldn't get into Halo nor Goldeneye. It took one night of playing Gears of War co-op with my friends to finally get used to using analog sticks.
