Imagine not owning both NTSC models for maximum ludo. ngmi, bro.
Seriously though, I never understood why the focus on the SNES vs SFC design instead of the more actually outrageous Famicom VS NES, with the latter being comically larger for no apparent reason. SNES and SFC actually are the same size. I like both too, don't trust randos on internet who claim the SNES is "ugly", like I don't trust your grasp on aesthetic and design.
Probably the reason why Famicom vs NES doesn't get much shitposting is because Euros actually got the NES too, so it's mostly a burger vs euro thing when it comes to snes and, not sfc, but PAL snes.

>Why did they fuck it up in North America?
It's all marketing.

>Console design
Nintendo of America obviously thought the Super Famicom design wouldn't be appealing in the US. The final result looks more like a "toy" but this is probably what they were going for. I think they were afraid consumers would think it was some generic gray cassette tape player. The Super Nintendo design screams, "THIS IS FOR GAMES."
>Controller design
This is nitpicky, the controllers are identical. Only the coloring is different. The purple-grey color scheme was added to obviously match the new design of the console.
>Box design
The boxes are better and more compact in Japan, and even show the full art more despite being smaller. My theory was that, again, NoA was worried US consumers would be confused. They didn't want game boxes to blend in with VHS Tapes at stores. This is especially relevant since Video Store rentals were much more common in the US. So the big wide boxes were to help them stand out as not being VHS tapes.
>Cartridge design
Again, the different cartridge style was just to match the console. And of course, region protection. The smoother, rounder Super Famicom cartridges had US boxier, more square counterparts to fit the change in console designs.
