They got fucked every step of the way. By EA especially.

EA reverse engineered their genesis carts, and threatened to leak the schematics if sega didn't allow them to use their own carts, hence the yellow tab. EA also fucked Sega again when the dreamcast came out. See, Sega had just purchased a studio that specialized in sports games, and EA threatened to no longer publish ANY games on the console if Madden wasn't the exclusive football game. Sega listened, making the purchase an absolute waste of millions that saw no return on investment.
