Loved the idea of having a portable emulation machine that could handle everything up to the 6th gen, and some anons said the Steam Deck was good for that, but man did I have a rough experience with it.
>got steam deck
>played some retro vidya on there
>notice the pressing right on the d-pad would drop some inputs
>asked steam support about it
>they told me to do an RMA
>get a new one
>it has the same issue
>send a video of me having the issue as well as find some videos of other people with it
>steam support tells me it still isn’t normal and wants to do a repair
>send it back
>wait a couple weeks
>finally get it back
>same issue
>ask if they are sure it isn’t just a defect with the design
>they tell me it must be the way I’m pressing it and say they won’t do any more RMA‘s but will give me a refund

And so I’m sending it back as, needless to say, the “go right” button is pretty dang important when playing old vidya. Sucks because I liked a lot about the thing, but having to deal with this saga for months only to have the issue written off as user error has put me off buying another portable device. Thankfully I’ve got a tech savvy friend who wants to build one with me so I may just go that route.
