I love Tower, their Tier 1 unit shoots when upgraded, and you get LOTS of them, incredibly good to have.
They also have another ranged unit, the Mage, which you can further stack
Finally, their Tier 7 unit is also fucking ranged, and it's amazingly good.

Oh sure, it's expensive and building up takes a while, but it's SO worth it in my opinion.
The heroes themselves are alright and cast alright (I don't cast a shitload of spells until I get to higher levels so it doesn't really bother me much).
I like Solmyr as he has Chain Lightning, which can be very advantageous in the early game as it's faster to deal with larger groups of enemies that way (I often have good results with this, and having a fast and efficient start is always good). He doesn't have a lot of other spells to start with though so you gotta have him pay a visit to a Mage's Guild if you want him to have the basics.

Oh, a tip is to buy heroes which have the skill Estates or just a daily bonus of 350 gold, they will pay for themselves over time, especially if you advance their Estate skill.
I once had a hero who had the daily 350 bonus, expert estates, and TWO Endless Bags of gold. Lodse Money
