I've got nothing against Mario per se, but I prefer the fast paced, physics based platforming of Sonic than Mario's brand of platforming.

I just love booting up one of the classic Sonic games and just ripping through levels at the "speed of sound". There's so many variables when it comes to the physics that it feels so satisfying to master it in your advantage.
Ever curl into a ball at the beginning of large slope and just have that satisfying feeling as you smoothly slide down and out, exiting the slope at top speed and maintaining that momentum as you breeze through the level, reacting to every obstacle that the game places in your way?

My love for the classic Sonic games are hard to truly describe, but that's one of the reasons. They also have great sound tracks, look graphically pretty good (and far more visually interesting than any Mario game) and overall are just charismatic games.

You see, Sonic was never about speed, he was about pinball physics. Therefore Boost and adventure are not Sonic in 3D, they're gotta-go-fast simulators with a sonic skin, similar to how Mario 64 is not Classic Mario in 3D, it's a collectathon. Mario 3D World is classic mario in 3D. There needs to be a Mario 3D World for sonic. A 3D game that that plays like the 2D games simply with an added dimension. A game with pinball physics and momentum. A game with actual platforming instead of homing attack spam and boost.

Replace sonic with a stick figure that turns into a pinball and Sonic Mania would still be fun. 3D sonic suffers from everything that is wrong modern gaming: constant autopilot segments that take control away from the player, a focus on style over substance, hallway levels with zero freedom, speed that isn't earned, a low skill ceiling, etc... 3D sonic doesn't have to suck (Utopia proved that), but it has so far.

Are you serious? Take a look at the image on the left here. You can ignore the right side as it's irrelevant here.

Sonic does not have as large a skillset as Mario, but the great genius of his games is that his abilities are incorporated seamlessly into the momentum of the stages he explores. Mastering Sonic is a physics puzzle. As a fan of both Sonic and Mario games, I can confidently say that Mario has a much lower skill ceiling. A somewhat skilled Mario player can clear a huge amount of obstacles in a single bound. Performing that kind of maneuver with sonic takes a lot more skill.
