If you don't like old 3D and the original wasn't your thing, try Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. If you can beat the game you'll be able to conquer the rest of the series with ease. It's also the game that defined the rest of the series in terms of world exploration. You can see a lot of the major roots of the series (besides the gameplay) first sprouting here.

First real magic system, the first towns, the first use of many key names in the series, and the first attempt to tie the game into a larger series by hinting at lost princesses and kingdom traditions.

Also, it's fun once you manage to master the combat and jumping controls.

Then that would be a time loop, not a timeline split. Which would make for an interesting game, but Majora's Mask is basically what you're describing with different nouns. Go ahead, keep moving that goalpost. I want to see how far I can kick.

Zelda 2 is my personal favorite because it's the only Zelda game I couldn't beat initially. All others are ridiculously easy by comparison. Majora's Mask would probably be my second favorite as it has some of the more complex puzzles in the series. Then Link to the Past is a raw nostalgia trip.

But so many series staples come from Zelda 2. I'm shocked more fans don't even attempt to scratch it's surface.

My favorite. Dead serious too.

But Zelda II is my favorite of the series. It actually had challenge and depth to the combat.

Zelda II is a surprisingly good game for all the hate it gets. Sure it's nothing like the rest of the series, but that's hardly something to blame the second game in a 17+ series. The challenge is there for most, but it isn't nearly as hard as the legendary challenges of the NES.

But the combat is tough and the platforming sometimes unfair.
