Tell me more about Dragon Quest

I am playing through DQ3 i'm about to leave Portogoa to get Black Pepper. On one hand the game is alright but I'm getting frustrated with the shoddy translation so it's hard to look up what anything does.

I feel like I had more fun in Final Fantasy 5, I looked up Dragon Quest 6 but it looks almost the same as 3 and will need a translation too. I just heard you could get slime characters?

So what is the best Dragon Quest game?

I just made it to top of Shampane tower and the boss killed me because they deal fuck-ton of dmg and i can't AOE the henchmen with my fireball and whip wtf
