I've had a serious problem with the way Doom 2016 reinterprets what OG Doom was in a sort of kneejerk reaction to Doom 3, and this feels like an extension of it.

Wolf 3D had a live system that Doom 1 shed, which is why it's a part of what makes Doom, Doom. It's hard for me to even consider Doom 2016 part of the same series unless you think of it in terms of brutal doom and fan mods after the fact, more of a zeigeist of the idea of what doom was v.s. what it actually was.

I've posted a ton about this but they basically gutted anything that included making you feel like you were in that environment or anything that got in the way of the power fantasy. In Doom 1, 2 and even 64 had enemies as a thing to struggle against and progress through.
Enemies in Doom 2016 aren't just not scary anymore, they are never an obstacle, to the point where imps will jump out of your way in environments later on just to get out of your way.
You're not navigating claustrophobic environments anymore, you're running through massive serious sam style arenas.

It just doesn't feel like Doom anymore to me.
I wanna be John Mcclane from Die Hard 1, not the sequels.
Or Ash Williams from Evil Dead 1 & 2, not the TV series.
