They are SO fucking menacing for Warrior. I really love how you're basically kicking ass most of the way until you find those assholes in the Catacombs or Caves, and then you learn that they exist.
Meanwhile, for Sorcerer and Rogue, they're really not that bad because you can engage them very easily from a distance (though in Nightmare and Hell, their melee striking is stunlock rape for Sorcerer, so they're a menace there).

Some day I'd like to try to create a monster with a similar mechanic for a Doom mod, just because I love how oppressive they are in groups.

Gotta get some Firebolt and Fireball in there, son, or at least good staff which can hold a bunch of them.
If you're playing Sorcerer, you become a fuckmachine with even basic spells like that, because you can cast them so fast and they cost relatively little.

Sure, but if you're OP and you asked about what you might have been missing, then people are going to tell you what they think you would.

A bunch of the quests in Diablo 2 were quests originally intended for Diablo 1, but which were cut in one way or another, and there's shitloads of those assets left in Diablo 1's files. The Hellfire expansion makes use out of a lot of that stuff, though in large part very crudely.

Belzebub does kind of the same thing using all that leftover stuff, but I think it does it a LOT better than Hellfire does, and it fits into the style of the game a lot better. It also does a bunch of quests and locations which made it into Diablo 2, as well as stuff which neither Diablo 2 or Hellfire made anything out of.
If you wanted Diablo 1, but more, and you thought Hellfire was a bit shoddy, then Belzebub really adds a lot more to Diablo 1.
What it also does is add some D2isms to the gameplay, for better or worse.

These motherfuckers. Spitting Terrors aren't the worst if you play as a Sorcerer or Rogue, but they're HARSH if you play as Warrior because you're a melee machine, higher tiers of them have certain resistances too so your meager spell casting can come up pretty short at times, so it's worth carrying a bow as a backup for dealing with guys like these.

Honorable mention to the Black Death variant of the Zombie types of enemies, not immediately dangerous but infamously every successful hit they make takes away 1hp from you permanently, which is pretty insidious. Thankfully they're slow and easy to avoid, even with the Warrior's slow spellcasting and bowmanship they're not too bad.

>Warrior is all about standing in front of an open door and luring enemies into the spot so you can take them 1on1
Or you can use spells and bows to change up your approach. You're not gonna be as good with them, but they'll still pay off well, and you'll typically dominate in melee.

>Rouge/archer(w/e) is all about trying to take down 1-3 at a time through moving slow and kiting them to you away from the pack.
Rogue is an even better spellcaster than Warrior though, combine with bows and you can do very well at range.

>Neither one has any skills to use to liven up gameplay or give you any sort of choice on how to deal with enemies.
This, is however, fair. Diablo isn't completely shallow, I think, but it's overall fairly simple. If I had the time and the knowhow, I'd love to develop a mod which adds a bit of depth by doing things like add some specific character abilities and functions, but while retaining things like everyone being able to cast spells (to the best of their abilities).

I'd probably want to decouple skills from the spell select, and apply it instead to Mouse3. Rogue's skill to detect and disarm traps is an obvious one to start with, and Sorcerer's skill to recharge staffs at the expense of total charges has certain utility in the early game, but Warrior's ability to repair weapons at the expense of total durability always felt very useless to me, even when I played it as a kid back in the 90s.
What would be a better starting skill for Warrior, and what would be other abilities which could be unlocked as you level? I know Belzebub did SOME of this stuff, but it also introduced some of the bloat and lategame tedium of D2LOD.

>But for example act 5 is mostly not scary at all. Like the boss fight with the barbarian heroes. Very cool, but closer to D3 than D1. I didn't really care about the fucking barbarians at all tbqh.
The base campaign felt fine for D2 after D1. It's the expansion that feels way off, and a big part of that is the musical style: It's much more "epic", orchestral, and doesn't fit the tone of the original at all. It sounds like it would better suit something like The Burning Crusade, not Diablo.
For reference, this is what the main theme for Diablo 2 used to sound like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZR4xWxrI3g
