I: Capcom's attempt at getting in on the jrpg craze of the fifth gen. While it's simplicity has a charm to it it's rather dull for the most part. An inoffensive game that only is really worth it for fans of the series.

II: More creative then I but with some rough edges. It was one of the first jrpgs to tackle religion so at release it was sort of known for that. Great ideas and innovations make it worth a look but the awful backtracking and dungeon design at points make it hard to fully suggest. The English translation is infamous for being maybe the worst localization ever made for a game.

III: First overall solid entry. The pacing is slow but overall the battle system and dungeons feel pretty refined compared to the snes entries. A fun game if you enjoy classic jrpgs. Well known for its beautiful art.

IV: What I feel is BoF at its best. The most interesting and complex world and battle system. This one is definitely the most heavy, not as "feel good" as the earlier game, some find the more serious tone and style a little disappointing.

V: Not retro A weird experiment of a jrpg. It can be thought of as a survival horror jrpg, having a deep emphasis on resource management and replayability for challenge runs/exploring more of the game as you understand it better.

This, IV is the best game in the series honestly.

IV's ending is amazing. It not having a perfect fairy tale ending where everyone lives happily ever after is what really makes it stand out. Yuna living adds genuine weight to Fou-Lu's viewpoint. Ryu and Fou-Lu, and thus the player, had experienced and the absolute worst that humanity has to offer, Yuna living is the ultimate message that in life villains don't always go punished, and Fou-Lu's genuine rage against humanity's sins feels genuinely compelling.

It's not perfect but as I've become older it's one of the few jrpg narratives I feel is truly compelling and interesting.

BoFIII has some pretty depressing stuff, all the stuff with Teepo is a downer, though it's much less of a focus in III.

Damn, why didn't the US get this? A few week ago at my local half price books they had the Japanese saturn port of this for $80. Was neat to see it in person but too pricey for me.

IV, of course.
>and why hasn't Capcom bothered to make a new one that isn't a shitty ass free to play mobage?
BoF doesn't make the money things like Monster Hunter and Street Fighter bring. Capcom is slowly recovering from the Crapcom years though, maybe we can hope to see something in the future.

The first game really does nust feel like Capcom trying to cash in on the jrpg craze of the mid 90's in Japan. As the series went on they started to get an actual identity beside "that jrpg by Capcom" though.

If you need to play only other BoF I suggest IV, it's easily the best of the series I feel. Though all of them are at least looking into, even BoFV on ps2. Just ignore the mobile game, never tpuch that abomination.

It's such a small feature but every time a new plot point happened I would love to set up camp just to hear what the characters had to say about it.

I-III are a sort of trilogy of games that are loosely tied by their antagonists. IV and V are thought to be their own separate universes though there exist theories of how they connect to the first three games. Really though they're able to all stand on their own and playing them in any kind of order isn't necessary.

IV is the best game by the way.

For retro the two that really effected me are Earthbound and Breath of Fire IV. Earthbound's writing was unlike anything I had seen and it had just the right emotional pull. Breath of Fire IV has a fun (if easy) combat system and a world I genuinely found interesting with party members and characters I found to be deeper then usual.

It's a great game with beautiful art, an interesting combat system, and a good story. The game's weak points are its low difficulty and some padding near the ending.

I played it last year with no nostalgia and was incredibly impressed. Play it anon.

Breath of Fire IV is one of my favorite jrpgs ever made, only played it last year too. Breath of Fire III is great too but not on the level of IV.

>I really enjoyed Earthbound/mother series and SMT
Are you me? Those are my two favorite series.

One game that I really loved was Breath of Fire IV. The first three lean more on medieval fantasy but IV has a more Asian inspired world and lore.

Another game I love is Metal Max Returns. It's like a more comical version of a standard post apocalyptic setting. You play as a kid trying to make it big as a bounty hunter and can play in a nonlinear manner making it interesting as well.

Enjoy anon. I only played it last year and it really resonated with me. The budget for the game was a bit short, and it shows in a few areas, but it really was a memorable game for me beyond the art and even the story had me pretty invested. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Tatsuya Yoshikawa may just be my favorite game artist, him or Kazuma Kaneko. Yoshikawa's art is just so vibrant and pleasent to look at, it's beautiful.
