If you're playing the GBC version, supposedly the thief's post-battle steal effect interferes with monster medal drops. I've been playing it without a thief just in case, since it takes along enough to collect monster medals as it is.
(It's true you can't get a thief steal and monster medal drop in the same battle, but I don't know if anyone's actually tested which takes priority.)
