I read a full and very detailed preview synopsis before the movie came out in which Sonya actually spared Kano's because she wasn't "that type of girl", annoying Shang Tsung. I don't know why they changed it (probably to enhance Liu's role as protagonist), but the dead Kano shot in the final film is kind of awkward and the closup of Sonya "giving him a break" was probably a pick-up done afterwards.

It's fantastic B-movie 2bh. Probably Paul W. S. Anderson's best, which is kind of sad
