If your solder is at risk of dripping, you are doing it wrong. You're supposed to heat the element, then apply the solder to the element (the lead of a component or leg of an IC, for instance). The solder will flow onto the heated item. Don't heat traces, though. They'll fry.

Don't worry about losing your saves. Just bite the bullet once and replace the battery with a CR2032 holder. You can get about 25-30 years out of the battery in an NES game, if not longer. My Final Fantasy still saves without issue, and I haven't changed its battery.

I changed the battery in my Legend of Zelda almost ten years ago, as indicated by this horrific digital photo.

Also low-voltage is like low water pressure. A squirtgun won't knock you on your ass like a firehose will.
