It seems like retro racers were a bit more creative, not all of them were trying to be as realistic as possible like today's (Aside from the new Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing). The more realistic stuff existed like Gran Turismo, but you also had more cartoonish/out of this world stuff like the futuristic setting of F-Zero, the hoverbikes in JetMoto, or the on foot platformer-racing combination in Sonic R, or the Cruisin' games having tracks in space, underwater and in the past with dinosaurs
