I didn't consider it retro enough, but it is from 2003. Dear fucking god.

I also have to bring up Sonic OVA from 1999, or Sonic: the Movie as it was called in the west. This was a weird take on Sonic, Very anime. I say weird because this came out around the same time as Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. But the OVA was based on elements of Sonic CD, bits of Sonic 3 and Knuckles and even has references to the DiC Sonic TAS from the '90s. It is an interesting take. Plus it has some pretty good animation and artwork.

This movie is one of my guilty pleasures. Kinda like Super Mario Bros. movie or the first Mortal Kombat.
