Much of the success of the PS1 can be attributed to Namco, Square, and Konami. Capcom, Neversoft, Insomniac, and obviously Naughty Dog also helped. Compared to Saturn or N64 though they had an unbeatable all-star lineup of third parties. Nintendo had Rare and Midway, and SEGA pretty much just had Capcom, maybe Taito if you're a shmup nerd. PS1 was also the console of choice for EA and Activision, even though they had games on N64 and Saturn they placed most of them on the PS1.

Combine all of that with what little output SCEA had (PaRappa, Ape Escape, Gran Turismo etc), competitive pricing, and some serious marketing, and you've got a force to be reckoned with

Outside of Capcom and Namco titles? PS1 had a lot. Saturn had very little in the way of games made specifically for home consoles by comparison, nothing as major as >>10200858 listed, maybe with the exception of Panzer Dragoon Saga and a handful of other RPG's close to the end of its lifespan. It's more like PS1 had arcade games but a bunch of other stuff on top of it which made it worth owning. Not a Sony pony but I do think it's all an around better console than Saturn

Crash is 3D but the levels are linear instead of open like Banjo and Mario. You can think of it almost like a "proper" 3D DKC game (though I still prefer regular DKC by a hair). Croc is a bit of a meme but the game is still fun if you can get past the tank controls. Spyro is totally different, it's open like Mario but way faster. You might like Gex 64 or Spider-Man for Dreamcast and PS1.

Not really retro but I guess you could try Super Mario 64 DS?

I had the og model growing up, didn't get my PSOne until next year so I never got to experience the portable screen and batter it had. Neat feature I guess but in 2023 I can just play them on my emulator handheld
