Water Temple was annoying. Mostly just a question of "what haven't you messed with in a long time" sort of deal, process of elimination. Keeping a memorable list of everything you couldnt get to is hard, but if you're stumped you can try to remember which rooms you've been to and then realize which areas were once inaccessible or had something you wanted to reach.

But the Fire Temple was much harder. I think most here seem to agree that the timed run to get up to the big chest was a pain. Primarily because of the restricted 8 directions only movement, and that last part of the curve was a tightrope act.

Aside from the water temple and the goron sword this was I believe the equivalent of this game's nintendo hell replay value. Difficulty spikes that make you invest alot of time and effort into getting past some obstacle which seemed at first to be like any other.

And the Fire Temple wasnt exactly without its convoluted 3d movement either. There was some vertical shit that had to be done as well, and those big lava rooms were kinda hard to get through.

The megaton hammer was practically useless for the rest of the game too, it wasnt like the magic hammer in LTP which was actually pretty nice (4 hits worth of damage, and it only had a small lead time before striking - megaton hammer takes forever to heft).

When they designed OOT they paid way too much attention to balancing the items so that they would pretty much only be useful for the puzzles they were designed for. In a variety of other zelda games, many items had their puzzle use, but were often useful for other things depending on tactics.

You got new boots? Great, they're only useful for a niche few things in the game thats it, add them to the pile of boots you're collecting.

But in LTP the boots were great for attacks and getting around quick. And in Minish the cape had attack moves.

> and OOT has no Swordbeam, if you want to engage enemies at a distance you need to use items

also this, but id say one thing that the water temple was I think supposed to be like a meditation labyrinth

like you'll reach the end at some point so just keep doing things, you're not supposed to figure it out, just retrace your steps a million times until you realize "oh I havent been Up There yet, how do I get up there"

> traditionally all water and ice dungeons in zelda are the hardest ones, to teach the player the power of water

I also hated the dungeon where you get the Hammer. Because getting to the boss key was so damned difficult due to the really narrow ledge and the screwy only-8-directions movement scheme.

And the boss fight with Ganon has a major flaw because I had to play the whole game through again due to screwing it up.
> whacked all the clay urns with the energy medicine, got tanked up but didnt bring energy medicine in a magic jar
> I dont have enough magic power to shoot Light arrows
> the clay urns with energy medicine did not respawn
> game was saved after the clay urns had been destroyed
> boss is undefeatable, and there was no warning of this being a possibility

Light Arrow was mega fucked up and stupid. It wasnt the Silver Arrow from the previous games which just enchanted your normal arrows.

And once locked in with the ganon fight you couldnt leave to resupply (and being knocked down to the prior floor doesnt count, like I said those items dont respawn).
