The classified information on the PS2 was mostly all stuff that was previously available on the Red Cross Book (which was distributed originally on theatres back in 1998 during EoE's rodation, and has been available in english since the late 90s on the internet in .txt), coupled with information from the 1993 proposal which was available on the 100% Newtype artbook also since the late 90s (not sure if it was ever published in english, but I've got the spanish edition around 1999).

Anyway, Evangelion is enjoyable even if you don't read that supplementary stuff.
Evangelion is not the only work to have cryptic lore, look at 2001: A Space Odyssey.
