No. He's just being overly excitable.

Sloppy repros are easy to identify by simply opening the cartridge. They may have a chip with the wrong brand silkscreened on it, or have the wrong number of pins, necessitating that they be fitted with an adapter or glued upside-down onto the PCB dead bug style with wires running everywhere.

The original Playstation is of of the easiest hardware mods, especially the earlier models.

You can flash an off-the-shelf IC yourself or buy one already programmed if you don't have access to the equipment.

Secure it somewhere convenient with a drop of hot glue "dead bug" style and just solder wires from pins to contacts.
