Oh you mean that. Yeah that was dumb, but Quake 3 was a massive success - a cultural phenomenon despite being predicated on an erroneous bet.

Anon you didn't say anything to the contrary of what I said. Things are perfect when your imagination does the work for you, and that's all anyone has regarding the "original" Quake. You can keep going until you're blue in the face, but you're talking about "what-ifs" from over 20 years ago. Let it go.
