Eh, CRT X-rays are minimal except for particular early brands without faulty protection and only if you're close. Any relatively modern one doses you ~70x less than living in concrete building.
If they were fucking with the things, they might have possibly ruined the protective layers in the glass or something. Though it's more likely they got cancer from breaking CRT tubes since the glass has lead in it. Inside the glass that's good. Lead is not is your friend, it's only ever less of an enemy than potentially worse things.
