>what you guys think is the best class/weapon combinations for the protags.
It all depends on what you want to do with them, with the exception of a few characters like Ellen or Sarah that can't really be top tier due to a lackluster stat table.
What matters most is that you focus on the one stat you want to focus your character on, Harid, Julian and Katarina benefit from a build that focuses on STR because they have good starting STR, so making them Hunters with Swords/Greatswords already makes them great MCs, Thomas is potentially the most broken mage in the game so making him a Scholar with Maces or Unarmed specialization can lead to his best possible stat table in terms of specialization.
>I'm also a bit confused on the correlation of stats and how they affect damage / defense
Damage calculation is a complex matter, different weapons work on different stats, swords, axes, spears, maces and Martial arts work on STR, Bows and Rapiers work on DEX, then you have to consider the damage modifier of each weapon, that is cutting, piercing and blunt modifiers, then you have to add the defense modifiers of the enemy based on their types, rock and skeleton types for instance are basically immune to piercing but weak to blunt, then you have to add eventual racial modifier bonus for waza, Werebuster for instance deals extra damage to Were monsters, then you have to add the weapon's attack value and your proficiency with said weapon type, then you have to add the formation's effect on your stats, then you have Waza that work on different stats, Waza that are way more damaging depending on your proficiency level than others and so on, it's a very articulated system and I could spend at least ten posts trying to explain it to you.

Hard to say, the game uses a bit of everything.

The generation, soldiers and home facilities mechanics are taken directly from RomaSaGa 2, 2 out of 8 of those are managed by RomaSaGa reps (Sekishusei and Emerald), 2 are managed by RomaSaGa 3 reps(Fullbright and Nora), the rest are currently unmanned.

Poses are uniformed to RomaSaGa 3 system.

Growth mechanics are from RomaSaGa 1 and Frontier.

Waza and Jutsu are from all the three Romancing games and the original SaGa as far as I can tell, Lightning Bolt wasn't a spell in any of the games outside GB SaGa iirc.

I'd say the most recurrent themes so fa as from RomaSaGa 2, some people on 2ch were so impressed by this they were already thinking about a possible RomaSaGa2 remake in the future considering the amount of stuff in Imperial and the fact that now they have a lot of assets ready to do that, which wouldn't be a bad idea if you ask me.
