Forgot to mention in my previous post, but Disciples 2 (although quite a few anons argue 1 aged well) is really comfy but also quite depressing.

>i wouldn't say they have good artwork
I dunno - they're certainly not trying to invent hot water (you have your standard Tolkien-esque or D&D tropes) but the games still have a unique flare to them (e.g. the recurring appearance of evil canibalistic penguins).

>Is there any reason to play Disciples 1 at all, or should I just jump to 2

I was in the same situation you are in now and have decided against playing the first part, mostly because you can follow the plot relatively easily just with the info they gave you in the mission briefings.

>It's basically HoMM but with very railroaded scenarios and much less units and town buildings

Disciples and HoMM are both quite enjoyable games with their own unique flaws and features. If we're looking at gameplay, Disciples has diplomacy (shoddy as it is), world spells, unit upgrade trees for each faction as well as specialized heroes and leaders while HoMM has a large variety of combat spells (though you could argue that half of them are useless) as well as units and, most importantly, a random map generator and a vibrant online community. Neither of these games are very well balanced, which means that certain factions are simply better than others (though this isn't as much of a problem in HoMM since you can steal another castle) and that spells in general are OP (for HoMM these are mobility spells like Town Portal, Fly and Dimension Door while you can win almost every battle in Disciples by spamming damage and ward spells on your opponent and yourself, respectively). I won't touch upon the artstyle, soundtrack and the overarching story as they are subjective but I'd say that Disciples has a more enjoyable story, more memorable atmosphere and a better unit/character design while HoMM's overworld map and soundtrack are better. Likewise, combat is different enough that I don't think it's worthwhile comparing the two.

Basically, HoMM has a slightly more enjoyable (or more addictive) gameplay loop than Disciples and the map generator allows for near-infinite replayability, so HoMM is a better game on paper. Still, I'd like to see more TBS games akin to Disciples.

Oh man, Disciples II is awesome! I used to play (and make maps in) Disciples II and Heroes III regularly - shame nobody talks about it. If only someone would already make a turn-based strategy general thread...
