Judging from prerelease screenshots of Zelda Gaiden, it appears that you would originally obtain a mask that transformed you into OoT Adult Link instead of receiving the Fierce Deity Mask. Backing this up is the fact that FD Link appears to be a 1:1 port of Adult Link with a few things changed or nullified to be unusuable.
That image above is from a restoration hack. It makes the FD Mask usable outside of boss areas and adds the missing display lists for Adult Link over FD Link so you can literally play as OoT Adult Link in Majora's Mask.
