and that screenie seems to be in user interface scale 4, with my monitor being 1600/900. maybe not entirely 900 though since i play in windowed all the time.

I'll bet the contrarians at /vr/ will say DX is better. And it might actually be, depending on your taste. I prefer IV; but Dracula X was my first Castlevania game back in '95. Both are pretty gud.
