Have you ever tried playing the jp version? (Akumajou Densetsu). The US version I remember being bit harder but I think the japanese version is toned down, also Grant Danasty is incredibly useful because his normal attack throws daggers.

Simon's Quest is a pretty underrated game but it's understandable why. I only wish the bosses were... Tougher. I still went out of my way to kill them and I'm pretty sure you get rewarded if you do.
