>do you make an effort to actually use them
Absolutely. The point of a singleplayer game is to have a fun experience.

The only reason I would NOT use mechanics like this is if the mechanic makes the gameplay unfun or using them is really clunky. Like FEAR has pretty damn cool melee kicks, I use them occasionally even if they aren't all that useful in the end.

But I certainly use mechanics a lot more if they're well integrated to the core gameplay. Not necessarily mandatory, but if they don't fit to the general flow of the combat / feel fun, then not very likely.

Environment interactivity, playing as a big tiddy sexoooo girl with detailed and varied ryona defeat / death animations?

But when I think of something like Max Payne and what makes those games cool, I think it's the slowdowns that the whole "the entire environment exploding around me as the bullets impact the place, cinematic camera angles kicking in" kinda things, also as much as people hate the cover systems, I think MP3 worked really well with those.

And also incorporating seamless melee, melee works just inherently better in third person than first person.
