Liquid Kids might be the cutest game ever made. The walking animation while in water makes women instantly love the game.

Taito is one of my favorites. While a lot of their games don't quite hit the mark they are usually overflowing with style and panache.

I've been really digging into New Zealand Story. The game is very hard but there is something very addicting about trying to get further and further into the game.

New Zealand Story

I don't think it gets cuter than this game, really.

>What happened to them later on?
Purchased by Squeenix and operating on life support for the last decade or so. It's a shame, they're nearly single handedly responsible for the popularity and rise of arcade games in the 80s. The quality and scale of their output in that decade is unreal.
