SGI workstations like the Indigo series and the more "affordable" Indy series (jokingly called Indigo without the GO, because these were kinda slow-ish at release)
My first contact with SGI was also the Indigo(still with a R3000A CPU).

As for software; Alias/PowerAnimator and Softimage 3D ... those found their way into many of the larger studios.

1. Yes and no. There are cracked versions of PA, good luck finding one. I think CGPeers had one at some point, but it wasn't a properly cracked one.
2. No. IRIX emulation isn't there yet. You can boot to desktop, but anything that needs the more advanced features doesn't work.
