I have another tip to add for you.

Never save after you have died. The level restart resets all your weapons so you need to find them all again. This really fucks you over.

Got through the whole game on normal difficulty without savescumming, just making sure to save at the start of every level. On different slots each time (Some levels starts can fug you).

And yes the game does have a difficulty curve like this.
