If it's a game/series you really enjoyed since you were a kid, you just accept that you have a bias for it while being open to other opinions. I do this when people criticize games like Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man X, or Sonic games. I have basically accepted that while I personally really enjoy these games, they are not necessarily for everyone. A lot of people prefer Yoshi's Island over the DKC games for instance. It is really down to one's personal taste.

Not quite... There are a handful of 3D games on it, but not nearly as many as either platform, plus no disc drive means no full motion video or digital audio. It's still a great console though, better than N64 imo.

It used to be my favorite but was surpassed by the CD add-ons for me, but I still wouldn't say it's garbage lol. Still has plenty of fun platformers, shmups, RPG's, and puzzlers (probably a slightly better puzzler selection than Genesis imo). It gets even better if you delve into the Super Famicom library with games like Parodius, Cotton 100%, and Umihara Kawase.

Amiga is not leagues ahead, neither is Super A'Can. Neo Geo has better tech but I prefer SNES's library, same with CPS-1 and CPS-2. So that leaves X68K, Genesis, and TurboGrafx (technically 8-bit but w/e). Honestly these are all good choices, even if we put SNES in fourth place it's still far from garbage imo.

I will say I do kind of wish Nintendo had adopted CD tech for the SNES or N64 somehow, even if it meant throwing Philips some more money to develop an actual proper add-on. I also agree that Square and a lot of other devs really hit their prime on the PlayStation when CD and 32-bit tech was available.

I'm 32 so I grew up with SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, etc. It started with nostalgia, but then I started finding a bunch of really cool games and consoles that I missed out on as a kid since I only really had the basics (Mario, Donkey Kong Country, Sonic, etc). I started losing interest in modern gaming around 2010 or so when I got a RetroDuo and (finally) a boxed copy of DKC2 for Christmas. I started looking at clone consoles, other retro games I always wanted but never got as a kid, Japanese-only titles like Parodius and Umihara Kawase, and games I never knew about.

Fast forward a decade later and now I play more SEGA CD and Turbo-Grafx CD than anything else, finally got a chance to try Saturn a few years ago, and I have a growing collection of (fake) Game Boys. I would say just play what you enjoy and start from there if you're looking to get into retro, even if it's just Xbox and Wii or something. Not everything has to be 90's, I just personally find those games more interesting since that's what I grew up with.

We rented a single game, DKC2 for SNES. Everything else was bought. There's a long story about it, but I never actually owned DKC2 until later in life, but managed to get a CIB copy while they were still cheap a little over a decade ago and now it's one of the most valuable games I own. And thankfully we never traded in, so I still have all of my other old games. I think my cousins traded in most of their old stuff which I really wish they hadn't. So many great games they used to own, one of them had all of the SEGA consoles, the other one had stuff like Mischief Makers for N64.

This is a great game. Might be my favorite game of all time.

I just played it and beat it the other day.

Some of the secrets in it are so hard. They took me forever to find them. For instance, one DK coin is hidden WITHIN a bonus area. Fuck, that one was difficult to find. I doubt any kids could find all the secrets in this game.

What are some other games with really difficult secrets?
