The tank controls are kind of the critical factor; your average garden variety zoomer can still pick up MGS and just play it, but this one would probably be considered to have "aged poorly"

Nah, it plays fine as long as you don't try to apply a modern gameplay mindset to it or rush things too much. Solid game, terrific soundtrack, interesting art style, overall extremely fun to play even as flawed as it is.

The draw distance is at least "explained" with the missions set at night (though they should have implemented some sort of indication of light sources in non-drawn space. Tenchu 2 didn't even try to make the daylight missions look acceptable
