I'm not sure but I think Rakuga Kids might be one of the 2D games with the most amount of animation frames per character I know. I tried comparing it to other games with lots of animation frames like SF III or Garou and I think Rakuga still has more.
Granted, the sprites themselves are very simplistic, but the animation is quite complex.

k, but Rakuga Kids might be the fighting game with the most amount of animation frames per character. Maybe something like AoF3 comes close, but not sure.

Are you claiming the PS has more power than the N64?
Pic related is a 2D fighting game by Konami. Sure, the sprites are simple, but count how many frames are there. And that's just 1 character.

Has an insane amount of animation frames per character

Another game with insane 2D animation is Rakuga Kids, a sorta obscure fighting game made by Konami. The character designs are simple, and look like crayon drawings ala Yoshi's Island, but pay attention to the amount of frames. Pic related is just 1 of the dozen or so characters the game has.

>Mortal Kombat Trilogy

That shit was bad on PS1 too. I still don't know what were they trying to do with it. I had both versions as a kid, and didn't enjoy them at all, and I was a huge MK fanboy (MK2 mostly).

>KI2

I don't remember Gold being bad.

Then again, both of those games are western fighting games.

There just isn't many other 2D fighting games on N64 to actually compare, only Rakuga Kids which showcases an immense amount of animation frames, I'm not sure if there's any PS1 fighting game with this much frames per character.

As >>3714320 said, it's totally possible to get good ports of arcade fighting games on the N64, but it would be expensive to produce.

Rakuga Kids has an insane amount of animation frames per characters.
A shame it was never released in the US. It still would have remained a little obscure title, but I would have bought it back in the day.

Got a japanese copy recently and it's actually pretty good.

>It was a stiff and useless piece of hot garbage.

it's the exact same d-pad as the SNES. The reason it's stiff is because it's barely used so it remains immaculate in most cases.
Give it some use and you'll see how it's not stiff anymore.

>Cart size would've limited 2d fighters a lot.

I dunno, Wonder Project J2 has some of the best 2D animations I've seen in games and it was a standard early N64 release.
Rakuga Kids also has a shitload of animation frames per character, pic related.
The reason Capcom or SNK didn't bother releasing fighters for N64 is because it would have been barely profitable considering everyone had the PS1 (and the Saturn, in Japan) and it was a lot cheaper to make CDs.

There are actually more than you'd think. N64 has probably one of the best 2D-animated games from that era, Wonder Project J2, and it was also an early game from 96.
Pic is from Rakuga Kids, that's the sprite animation sheet for just 1 of the characters.

>Is it true that they aren't actually 2D sprites, but basic polygons made to resemble them?

I also remember reading this, but I think it also applies to PS1 and even the Saturn, I guess it had to fo with 5th gen's architecture change.

What's the game with the most amount of frame animation?

Something like SFIII or garou looks like it might be it, but Rakuga Kids also looks like it has a crazy amount of frames per character. Granted they're simple designs, but still a shitload of frames.

That's a Konami game.
The sprite animations for that game is actually quite impressive. The bad thing is that it was never released in America.
