Nope. If you want to put up a vanilla server or zdaemon-level advanced wad, people will play it.

Here is from the last time someone put up a vanilla /vr/ server.

It was the second most populated server out of all Zandronum servers and stayed up for 16 hours. It was a Doom2.wad server. Completely vanilla.

The Plutonia server he put up afterwards was 3rd or 4th most populated and stayed up for a similar amount of time. Similar results have happened with similar servers in the past, including even ones which disabled mouselook for all players (search "plutonia final destination" on the archive.)

Vanilla is played on Zandronum. Your perception does not match reality.
