I did a front light mod and I was not terribly impressed with the result. I bought a GB Boy Colour and I like the results much better.

I am hoping eventually full screen replacement mod kits become more widely available. Maybe McWill will make one sometime.

Here's a comparison between my modded GBC and my GBBC.

In all the GBC mod isn't bad but it does take a bit of work and you are probably going to end up with dust specks in it, even if you do it very carefully. I think people have had better results with a GBA SP front light, but that makes expense a bigger problem. I gave a modded GBC to my brother and he liked it just fine, although once I got the GBBC I kind of just boxed up my GBC and haven't played it since.

You're in luck, because GBCs are cheap. You can get a used one for only about $30.

I would however recommend you give the GB Boy Color on Ali Express a look. It only costs $30 which is the same as a used GBC, and the screen is very nice. I have a front-light modded GBC and I've scarcely touched it since getting a GB Boy Colour. I keep it for old times' sake and the hope that one day someone will sell a proper screen replacement kit for it that surpasses the GB Boy Colour, but until then the GB Boy is fine for me.

Reminder the the GB Boy Colour is the best way to play GBC games on the go.

I own one and I love it. The screen is much brighter and more colorful than my front-lit GBC, and the plastic quality is actually very close to Nintendo. It's good and dense and there's no creaking.

The horizontal resolution is actually integer-scaled so you won't see any "shimmering" when going left to right in side scrollers, although the vertical resolution isn't integer scaled so you will see a little bit in games like Pokemon and Zelda with lots of vertical scrolling. I own a McWill game gear though so non-integer scaling isn't a deal breaker for me anyway.

The only things that are a little wonky in my opinion are the built-in games and the D-pad. The D-pad is good although it's possible to push dead center which initially I found made playing Metal Gear Solid a bit more difficult, however I once I got used to it it was fine. I could swap it out for a real GBC pad sometime but I think the stock one is alright.

Honestly I almost never use my original GBC anymore, which is a little sad given how much effort I put into restoring and modding it. I will probably take the GBAmp 3 out of it and put it in my modded GBA instead since the GB Boy Colour is loud enough for me and now I'd like for my GBA to be quite a bit louder than it is.

I just bought a Kongfeng GB Boy Colour and have played it for a few hours and this is my initial review. Feel free to AMA.

First of all, the build quality on this thing is surprisingly high for a knockoff. The plastic feels very sturdy and dense, almost like a real Nintendo product. The plastic has no flex to it and overall it feels very similar to a real GBC in my hands.

I'll get right to the part that you are probably wondering about though, which is the screen. The screen isn't perfect but overall it is really, really good. It doesn't quite have the same "wow" factor I got when I first turned on my modded McWill Game Gear, but that's to be expected since this is only a $30 system and the screen is a lot cheaper. Regardless, it's much brighter than my front lit GBC and the contrast and color depth are very good.

The screen is unfortunately not integer scaled so you will see some artifacts, and it's a 4:3 screen instead of 1:1, but if that is not a deal breaker for you then I can definitely say it's worth buying. That's something I got used to on my modded Game Gear so I adjusted very quickly to it.

There are a few other quirks that are worth mentioning. First of all, the built-in games are a bit dopey. The way the GBBC detects a cartridge is through a levered micro switch in the cartridge port, and I find this method to be somewhat flakey. Sometimes it gets confused about whether or not a cartridge is inserted and I have to remove it and power cycle. I will probably end up removing the switch and disabling the games permanently. They're all original Gameboy games anyway and some of them have weird bugs, like Donkey Kong.

Beyond that, the D-pad is a bit different. It's possible to press the center which in some games can cause glitches, but it's not nearly as bad as some aftermarket GBC d-pads I've tried. Corners register well, which is a must for Metal Gear Solid. Also, the "IR port" is just decoration.

Overall, for $30 I give it a major thumbs up for now.
