DOOM has virtually no story and very little exposition text in game yet tells an epic tale of a lone marine fighting his way to Hell and back

What would the retro gaming landscape look like if Shigero Miyamato had never worked for Nintendo? Never created Mario, never created Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroidvania, Megaman, Blaster Master? Would Nintendo have failed?

What's your least favorite part of your favorite retro game?

Mine would be Earthbound: The Monkey Cave

Fuck this place. It just feels unnecessary BS to get Paula back, it's not that it's challenging, just feels like busy work.

This sums up well just why it's so bad:

Super Mario 64was released in 1996 as a launch title for the Nintendo 64, and is commonly cited as one of the most influential 3D titles of all time. At the time of release, there's no question that it was head and shoulders above any contemporaries, to the point that very few games released at the time could claim to be within spitting distance of all the design and technology achievements of the game.

That said, one thing a lot of critics and games enthusiasts discuss is the concept of a game "aging poorly", i.e. the art of game design advancing sufficiently enough after a game's release that viewing the game through the lens of current game design renders the game in considerably poorer light than it was viewed upon release.

A good example of this is Gears of War. At the time it codified the idea of a cover shooter, but subsequent games have built on this formula in many ways, leaving the core gameplay loop of Gears of War 1 looking distressingly simple by comparison compared to modern games which prominently feature cover shooting.

So, the question becomes: Was Super Mario 64 merely good for the time it was released, or do you believe that it is still a good game by modern design principals? Was it good for the time, or good for all time?
