One thing I noticed that makes it feel so clunky and frustrating is that you can't jump as soon as you start running (see webm), you have to make 2-3 steps first. You can test it yourself easily because the game buffers your jump input. Presumably they wanted it to be one fluid realistic animation and didn't know any better or just didn't want to bother animating all the possible cancels jump angles. However, keep in mind it came out in the same year games like SM64 already perfected 3D controls

Now DKC feels good to play, albeit suffering from its own form of clunkiness compared to newer DK games
