This isn't Kain's fault so much, its a symptom of a lot of his Lances being absolutely shit except for very specific instances.
Give him an Axe and when you can give him the Berserker Sword til you can give him a better Axe.
Then only use lances when you KNOW what you're about to fight and that your lance is strong against that enemy.

For example, you get the Holy Lance about 5 or 6 floors about Zeromus, all of the enemies in the Moon are strong against Holy Attacks, so your best weapon on Cecil & Kain actually suck dick against everything you're fighting.
Zeromus is super weak to holy though, and doesn't use his counter-attacks on physical attacks.
