It's fair to assume that a player has the manual for any cartridge based games. Many Atari games are totally incomprehensible without the manual

But it's also not reasonable to claim there's nothing cryptic about the english version of a game because the japanese version is clear

Really though it lead to the early equivalent of social gaming and massive cred to the kid at school who figured it out before the guide book came out
