Disabling clearance allows you to place multiple things in the exact same place. So if you'd do it with a coaster, you'd get around the restrictions in place that prevent you from making a coaster you actually want.

This is really what I was going for with the 'hacks are fine' thing. I find vanilla so restrictive myself that when I build I sometimes struggle to make what I really want. I figured other people might feel the same.
