Darius Gaiden has some sick effects that none of the ports retained, and none of the emulators get it right either.

You can't really top Darius Gaiden in this category.

Unfortunately, MAME sucks shit and many of the games best effects are missing as a result.

>He's right. The PS couldn't even run Darius Gaiden well, whereas the Saturn had no problems whatsoever running that game.

Saturn was missing all the kickass shading on the backgrounds and slowed down pretty often.

All of those only matter if you've played the arcade original though. The effects are pretty subtle, and MAME doesn't have them either.

It made things like Neon Light Illusions stage look 10x creepier; it has the middle of the background shaded to near pitch black darkness, so looks like reality was cut in two and you are stuck in the middle with a monster appearing from a hole in space.

I like the original first game, and Darius Gaiden the best. Some of the boss designs were truly horrific. Undersea life can be downright scary sometimes.

Still need to buy the new Darius game on Steam, I'm waiting until it drops to under $20.

Neon Light Illusion was the most psychedelic boss in that game.

I only wish the home ports could've had the per-scanline luminosity trick that the arcade hardware had. The background behind that boss looked 10x better in the real hardware because of that - and not even MAME gets the effect done.
