I always thought the Sega Dreamcast was a very pretty console. So compact compared to the Sega Saturn that preceded it, and the stylings at the back made it look aerodynamic and neat.

it's interesting to me hearing people talk about how you have to change the thermal paste in modern consoles like the playstation 3 in order to prevent extreme heat or failure if the thermal application on it is dried out
meanwhile, older disc based game consoles like the playstation 2 or dreamcast don't need this maintenance - why is that? they're all heat generating disc based consoles complete with internal fan/fans
is it really purely because those older consoles have so much less horsepower?

Is it possible to connect this thing to the internet nowadays with the broadband adapter?
I'm not talking about any games. I'm talking about simply connecting it to the internet. I was curious if it's possible to simply connect it to broadband as-is and use the IRC client and web browser on the Dreamcast.

The sports games on Dreamcast were basically SoA's response to the excessive amount of arcade ports and fighting games on Saturn. They needed something to bring western audiences back and Virtua Fighter wasn't going to cut it. Obviously the Dreamcast had plenty of arcade ports as well, but stuff like NBA2K and NFL2K stopped it from being "too Japanese" like its predecessor. Nintendo never really had arcade games to begin with, and the PS1 had plenty of arcade ports as well, but there were enough other genres to balance it out very evenly compared to the Saturn.

Found a Dreamcast at an antique store that comes with 3 controllers and memory card for $340. Is it a scam at that price? I kinda want it for Maken X or some other games.

Should I pick up a western one, or a Japanese one? The Sega Saturn was incredibly easy to 'hack' thanks to some nifty work arounds, does the Dreamcast have as big of a modding scene as the Saturn?

Japanese Dreamcasts, including the controller and VMU, go for around 60 USD. American Dreamcasts are far more expensive.

Dreamcast is maybe the one retro console I have given the least attention to. I feel like it's time to change that. But where do I start? What's the state of emulation? Is it worth picking up real hardware?

As far as I'm aware, most of the really good games on this system were multi-plat, so at the time I either played them on PC. PS1 or PS2. But besides the usual suspects like Sonic or Phantasy Star or whatever, were there any exclusives worth digging up? What were your favourite Dreamcast games, and why?
