Also of note, it was written by semi famous sci fi author David Brin of the Uplift novels (which also contain intelligent dolphins) as well as the book The Postman which was turned into a terrible movie.

Defender of the Future feels quite a bit different from the first two games, you can really tell it was made by a different team. But I think it's also excellent. Also probably scarier than the Genesis games as well. Getting lost in a maze of 2D caves was horrific enough already.
