Mah bois for this genre that i've recently found are both of the Star Cruiser games. Both were on PC98, but the Genesis port of 1 trumps the original game as it was released near 2 and plays more like it. Its original port used turnbased battles, which you can switch to in 2 if you desire, but the FPS gameplay is where it's at,

They're both really fun adventure shooters, with rpg elements, entire galaxies to fly through and land on. You can mine asteroids for ship fuel in space, and fight pirates (which earns you cash for ship upgrades in 2), and landing on planets switches you to a land tank, which you can explore towns and their surrounds and fight through mazelike dungeons as the plot allows. Despite the draw distance, these bits are a lot of fun and feel fastpaced and arcadey.
