I did originally start with the Playstation, but as games started to play worse on the upside-down system, I switched over to the Saturn as my preferred multi-plat machine not for the video but just smoother gameplay. Video compression was quite heavy and the macroblocks could be seen, but there are a lot of modern algorithms like waifu2x that can clean it up. Maybe utilizing that DLSS3 could improve the video from how it used to be. AI is advancing well to flesh out the artist's intentions which were limited on the machine. The one MPEG card required Saturn game looked fine to me, and Tengai Makyou 4 on the Saturn had really impressive FMVs that did not have the macroblocks of color without any need for the MPEG card.

I originally got the upgrade card because it was cheap plus it enables play of Silver Star Story Complete. It was a bonus some games like Puyo 2 utilized it as well. There used to be a Chinatown in my area which sold VCDs of recent movies still in theaters like 2-3 for $1USD. They would have funny subtitles that didn't match. These Evangelion VCDs has a Japanese track and a Vietnamese (?) track, it is weird but since movie tickets were an outrageous $7USD for matinee (Tues at noon) and up to $10USD a person the $30USD for the VCD card was a decent investment for such bootlegs.

At which point are we imagining the lack of Sony's involvement? Since they did the SFC/SNES sound chip which was a clear advantage that system had over its competitors, as most favor the music and sounds from its games. Would they go through with the addon CD-ROM drive to Nintendo's 16-bit console? Namco was a heavy investor into the Playstation project, but they did not favor Nintendo nor Sega at the time and was looking to escape both.

With all the butterfly effect possibilities factored in, thinking of my favored Sega would still end out failing and would still be out by the time Microsoft rolls around. For any of that to change all conditions need to be met: Namco accepts their primary arcade competitor to dictate their cost on hardware, Square opts out of their comfortable agreement with Nintendo, Electronic Arts willing to develop games for lower profit margins against competitors, Japanese animation catches on sooner globally, Sega management unified globally with a cohesive technically-sound planning and no fuckups ... chances are still slim, but only then would fates change.

A fun exercise, but does not change the industry from companies with deep finances.

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is practically the only game which uses the MPEG card. The standard Lunar: Silver Star Story is the same with just worse/smaller FMVs. Aside from some bonus video on other titles, it was mainly for VCDs, so you don't lose too much with the Satiator.

I remember going to a trade show, but they took a space in a different building than where other videogames were. They had a large floor presence showing off a lot of stuff. I was really impressed with the huge trackball controller they set up for a lot of the games. I do clearly remember Hotel Mario there but I didn't spend as much time in that area as I did for all the other games in a different location at the trade show.

I am envious. I always wanted an LD player and all the amazing clarity was so desirable to me back then but it was for the rich. I had to settle for haggling in Chinatown for bootlegs on the poverty country format.
