Splatterhouse is admittedly underwhelming as a fighting game, but the game fucking oozes atmosphere and style. Great music, great and disgusting visual design, hilarious gore.

Splatterhouse is pretty damn visceral, and the games get bonus points for enemies which look fucking disgusting before you even start tearing them open, like the Bore Worm.

Doom comes to mind as well, the death animations for a lot of the monsters are very detailed with guts and bone and shit, there's also various corpse decorations, the ones which hang from the ceiling are particularly grotesque.

Rise Of The Triad doesn't have as detailed gore for the most part when it comes to death animations, but it scatters parts around when a dude gets gibbed, like his severed hand flipping you the bird, and if you're close enough their eyeballs will stick at your screen. ROTT had a very Looney Tunes approach to gore and viscera, in that it was very ridiculous and unbelievable, a favorite of mine is that fire deaths had a guy burn down to a skeleton, which then would collapse making xylophone noises.

Not retro, but I actually did order that one, because it fascinated me. Hear it had a lot of really bad problems with development, the lead dev didn't want to make a Splatterhouse game, he really wanted to make his previous game again, in spite of agreeing to make a Splatterhouse game for Namco (which drove them increasingly irate at his bullshitting).
Haven't played it yet for a lack of time, also because I fear it'll filter me.

I don't give a fuck about that. A Splatterhouse Total Conversion for GzDoom could be really cool, but part of what makes Splatterhouse cool (besides the grisly violence and disgusting monsters), is the really groovy music.

It'd be like making a Castlevania TC without any music. Hell, I don't love the new music in Playstation Doom and Doom 64, but it is in fact a soundtrack intended to evoke a certain atmosphere, and to a point it succeeds in that, it doesn't leave you with no music at all.
Doom 3 had a gnarly as fuck intro theme, which builds up your expectations, but then blueballs you with ZERO music after that, which is the game's greatest flaw.

I want to play as Rick Taylor, beefed up and with the evil mask, and I want to punch monsters so hard their heads explode, slam them into walls with pipes and two by fours, abort demonic fetuses with a chainsaw, cleave unnatural creatures in two with giant cleavers, and I want to do all of this while a mix of creepy tension music and heroic fight music plays.
