Because it does everything right.
Everything.
There is no flaw.
It's not spectacular, deep, etc. It's just flawless. The best minds in the genre coming together to build a game to end all JRPGs.
I first played it in 200 2BTW, so that's not nostalgia.

I tried to find a flaw in it, because FFXI is my favorite and I did not want that to change. It didn't. FFIX is still my favorite in the genre. But as a game, CT exceeds it.
I cannot deny that. The only other game I can think of that can match it is ALttP.
